Our mission is to empower people to build strong and sustainable families and communities. These values, coupled with the Family Support Principles, guide the work and direction of Cascade People's Center. Over 6,000 people use the Center annually, 60% of who are below the median income, and over 50% of the Center's work is accomplished by volunteers. Peanut Butter Jelly and Books, a summer reading program, is particularly popular and brings children together while improving their reading skills. Groceries from the food bank, food demonstrations and on-site WIC services help people to meet their basic nutritional needs. Parenting and family information and resources such as playgroups for caregivers and young children, parenting classes and teen parent programming build community and offer support. Elementary School students participate in the after school tutoring programs and Summer Reading Club to improve their academic and social skills. Adults can gain employment and life skills through money management and budgeting classes, one-on-one computer training, employment counseling, employment skills workshops and individual life coaching sessions. Shoreline, WA 98155 More than a thousand families each year rely on the Center for Human Services (CHS) for counseling and support, including medical care for newborns and their mothers and emergency food bags. The majority of CHS clients are low-income, and two out of three are under the age of 18.
